How a local company helps us provide you with the best wine to go with our great food
One of our mission statements here at The Wild Swan is to promote local food & drink and, as far as a wine supplier goes, we could not get much closer (or better) than Yorkshire Vintners. A family owned company based just down the road in Ripon, Yorkshire Vintners have been supplying the local community with a fine selection of wines since their beginnings in 2010 and they’re determined to bring us the best wines from both emerging and established regions around the world.
Wine can be one of the trickiest products to source locally due to the conditions in England not exactly being suitable for most grape varieties to flourish, although improvements are being made in this area all the time. Such as it is we currently only have one English wine available on our menu. From the Bacchus grape we have Gifford’s Hall, a lovely dry white wine with notes of elderflower and gooseberry. Now this isn’t a wine a lot of people would pick out of a line up due to unfamiliarity more than anything else but everyone who does is in for a treat. As the weather starts to improve this would be an excellent wine to pair with our Moules Mariniere, Roast Cod and Rainbow Trout dishes or even just to share a bottle of between friends in the sunshine!
Another fine wine on our menu you may not be familiar with is Hochar from the Chateau Musar Winery in the Bekaa Valley region in Lebanon. Whilst most people wouldn’t identify Lebanon as a traditional wine making region, Chateau Musar have become world renowned for their production of fine wines since they first began in 1930. In this particular instance for Chateau Musar’s ‘Hochar’ they have blended the varieties of Cinsault, Grenache & Cabernet Sauvignon for a rich, spicy & profoundly fruity wine with flavours of cherry, tobacco and Mediterranean spices. This truly is a ‘must try’ wine and would pair exceptionally well with one of our steaks or our Lamb Rump dish.
With a large selection of wines available by the bottle there’s sure to be something for everyone so we’d encourage you all to ask us for a recommendation and we’d be happy to tell you more about our fabulous wines. With a fine selection of Whites, Reds, Rose, Prosecco and English Sparkling Wine (much better than champagne!), Yorkshire Vintners have enabled us to both promote English brands whilst offering the best of everywhere else as well.
